The Book of Thoth
Tarot’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Some claim the cards descend from ancient Egypt—the Book of Thoth transformed into portable wisdom. Others trace them to 15th century Italy, where the Visconti family commissioned the first known decks. Regardless of origin, the tarot became the occult world’s most powerful divination tool.
The 78 cards form a complete symbolic system—the Major Arcana depicting the soul’s journey from Fool to World, while the Minor Arcana maps daily life through four elemental suits. As Éliphas Lévi wrote: “The Tarot is a truly philosophical machine which keeps the mind from wandering, while leaving it initiative and liberty.”
🎴 Historic Tarot Decks
The most influential decks through history:
- Visconti-Sforza (c. 1450) – First known deck
- Tarot de Marseille (1650s) – The classic tradition
- Rider-Waite (1909) – Modern standard
- Thoth Tarot (1969) – Aleister Crowley’s vision
The Major Arcana: The Fool’s Journey
22 keys to unlock the mysteries of existence—from innocence to enlightenment
0 – The Fool
New Beginnings
Pure potential, innocence, the soul before incarnation. The Fool stands at the cliff’s edge, ready to leap into the unknown.
Éliphas Lévi: “The Fool represents the human soul before its descent into matter—infinite possibility.”
I – The Magician
Manifestation
The divine masculine creative force. “As above, so below”—he channels heaven’s power into earthly reality through will and skill.
A.E. Waite: “The Magus is the Will in its most exalted state—pure, active, manifesting.”
II – The High Priestess
Intuition
Guardian of mysteries, she sits between the pillars of duality. Divine feminine wisdom—what is hidden, intuited, felt beyond reason.
Crowley: “She is the Scarlet Woman, Isis unveiled, the Divine Consciousness receiving manifestation.”
XIII – Death
Transformation
The most misunderstood card. Death signifies transformation, not physical death—the ego’s dissolution that precedes rebirth.
Traditional Wisdom: “Death is the reaper of the old to make way for the new. Fear it not.”
XVI – The Tower
Divine Intervention
Lightning strikes the false tower. Necessary destruction—what you’ve built on lies must fall so truth can emerge.
Paul Foster Case: “The Tower is liberation—the shattering of illusion brings freedom.”
XXI – The World
Completion
The journey’s end—and beginning. The soul dances in cosmic unity, having achieved enlightenment. All is one.
Waite: “The World is the fulfillment of all desire—the eternal now, the divine dance.”
